The busy streets of Kolkata were shocked and shaken as the ground beneath the City of Joy trembled in reaction to the recent earthquake in Nepal. On Friday night, November 3rd, 2023, a strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, causing severe shaking in the northern regions of the country, including Delhi-NCR, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Patna, Kanpur, and Jaipur.
Kolkata city which is renowned for its resiliency and energy was hit by an earthquake that caused waves to echo across the surrounding area. As per the National Center of Seismology (NCS), things started late on Friday night at exactly 11:32 PM when an intense earthquake struck Nepal with its epicenter situated 47 kilometers east-northeast of Dailekh. From this location, a great deal of ground shaking was felt throughout the state, all the way from the North to the South.
As soon as South Bengal began to receive reports of the earthquake, Kolkata was brought up in the seismic debate. Although the exact magnitude of the earthquake in Kolkata and the South Bengal district is not yet known, it was certain that the city had experienced the wrath of the earth. The Kolkata metropolitan region, with its millions of inhabitants, was stirred from its sleep as buildings shook and alarms were triggered.
The tremors were strong enough to wake people up and cause alarm across the city’s streets, even though they weren’t as bad as those felt in Bengal’s northern districts. The effects of the earthquake were felt not only in Kolkata but even in the nearby district of Birboom (West Bengal).
Although Kolkata and South Bengal were lucky enough to escape any major damage, this seismic event is an alarming instance of how unpredictable nature can be. Residents will now be more aware of the possibility of earthquakes in the area because they will still be remembering this one.
As the sun rises above Kolkata, daily activities resume as usual, but the people who live there will always remember the midnight earthquake as a reminder of both the might of nature and their own bravery.
